long lost Muhammad Ali clip

This interview from “This is Your Life” was conducted on Christmas Day, 1978.  After the “Thrilla in Manilla” and the rivalry is finally put to rest, I find it incredibly interesting to see Ali and Frazier interact.  Watching this, I truly wish Muhammad Ali had stopped boxing and not gone after Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick but eh, you do what you gotta do.  The part I find most chilling is Joe Louis message to Ali and the almost unbearable resemblance he shares with present-day Ali, now suffering from Parkinsons.

I have not been able to find the full interview online, but they do sell it on this website: http://www.radiofones.com/ali.htm

A few new, good-looking movie about Muhammad Ali

First one, I may have posted the trailer for a while back, it’s called “Soul Power” – somewhat of a companion piece to the great documentary “When We Were Kings” about Ali’s comeback fight with George Foreman in Zaire.

_______________

The second film is another documentary called “Facing Ali” – it’s about the opponents Ali faced throughout the years.  Funnily enough, I just started reading the book this is based off of, and poof, a movie is being made.

_______________

I think both films will be worth watching, right along with the Michael Mann directed “Ali” and Leon Gast directed documentary “When We Were Kings”

The Hurt Locker – quicktime trailer

hurt_locker_ver3

Fianlly, an Iraq war movie that is just that: a war movie.  No propoganda, from what I can see, just a straight out, intense looking war movie. Here’s a link to the quicktime version: http://www.apple.com/trailers/summit/thehurtlocker/large.html

Random sidenote: Another modern war movie I enjoyed was The Kingdom. Click here to see the trailer.

The Wrestler – official trailer!

Darren Aronofsky (in my opinion one of the only few “new” directors out there who actually “gets it” when it comes to a good movie) has finally put out a trailer for his new movie THE WRESTLER starring Mickey Rourke.  Some are calling it the “resurection of Mickey Rourke” and pretty much everyone agrees its a fine film.  With The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream, and Pi being some of my favorite films, I have no doubt it will be excellent.  Click for the trailer:

And in case you never saw THE FOUNTAIN (for shame) click here for the trailer.

The Notorious B.I.G. movie coming next year

One of the biggest musical artists of all time, Biggie Smalls forever changed the hip-hop/rap scene and became a cultural icon before being gunned down.  Here’s a trailer for an upcoming movie about his life, which looks pretty decent.

a follow-up on the Ingrid Betancourt story I posted months back…

She’s free! Along with many others, check this story out!

Man, this is a great story.  Ingrid Betancourt is such an astounding woman, someone who truly cares for the well-being of her countrymen and all those in abject poverty.  Like Ernesto Guevara, she has lived her life to its fullest capacity, and hopefully will continue to do so.  She’s a world mover and shaker.  I hope to live my life half as fully as both of these individuals have lived theirs.

Hot damn it looks amazing!  The sequel to “Casino Royale” in case you didn’t know.

And, on a sciency note, check this out:

The sounds these skulls make a truly otherworldly… it’s really an amazing sight for the senses.

R.I.P. To Some Truly Creative People…

As many probably know, Sunday comedian George Carlin passed away from heart failure.  He was 71.  His biting edge commentary will be sorely missed.  (Here’s a link to CNN for more).  Here is also a link to one his last great, stand-up routines called “Life is Worth Losing”.  Here is a link to the movie “Dogma” with Carlin in one of his best rolls (in my humble opinion).

Also as important, Stan Winston recently passed on.  The creative mastermind behind such great films as Jurassic Park, The Terminator, and many other amazing films.  Click the links above to see the master at work and here is a well put together tribute of this great man at work.  While I won’t get on a soapbox, I would like to let today’s CGI-driven generation know where all these overused “fancy effects” originated from…. namely plaster and molds.  Stan Winston did things that nobody else could, taking ideas from Steven Spielberg and James Cameron and making them into tangible, physical realities that millions have enjoyed over the years.  He will be greatly missed.
