A couple of recent reviews…
1. Blankets by Craig Thompson
Blankets is a graphic novel by Craig Thompson. I only use the term “graphic novel” because it is the most common definition, but in all honesty, it’s more of a novel than anything else. In fact, it’s better than most novels I’ve read lately. With sincere honesty that is sometimes sweet and others heartbreaking, Blankets is a coming of age story, a first love story, and an early adulthood story all wrapped in one. The artwork is beautiful, all black-and-white and filled with some of the finest lines I’ve seen in recent memory. Check it out, buy it for someone, sit down and read it in a sitting, you’ll find yourself sucked in until the very end. And then after.
2. Zack and Miri Make a Porno – a film by Kevin Smith
Eh, what can I say? I love Kevin Smith movies. The mixture of profanity, smart dialogue, real characters, etc etc what is there not to like? This movie is, I repeat, not part of the “Jersey Chronicles” of Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob, etc… but that doesn’t matter, it has all the excellent trimmings of those movies and more. Funny as fuck, but also the trademark mix of sweetness and reality, this movie was worth seeing in theaters. Haven’t laughed so hard in a long time.
